PBC chair to Burundi reiterates international community engagement

17 January 2013 - The United Nations Peacebuilding Commission (PBC) chair to Burundi this week reiterated international community willingness to support Burundi in the follow up of Geneva's partners conference held in October 2012.

"It will be easier for the international community to support Burundi if the government properly fulfills what it committed to in Geneva", Ambassador Paul Seger told the press in Bujumbura during his 3-day visit. The PBC chair to Burundi visited the country from 13 to 16 January to engage the Government on the follow up to the Geneva partners conference and to discuss the next steps for the Peacebuilding Commission's engagement in Burundi.

While recalling that "all parties mentioned Geneva's conference success", the PBC chair to Burundi stressed the government's will to cooperate with PBC. "It is very positive that Burundi appreciates PBC's work and is ready to continue its cooperation with the commission", Seger said.
During his visit, Ambassador Seger was received by Burundian President Pierre Nkurunziza and the second Vice president. He also held discussions with the minister of Good Governance, the National Electoral Commission and the Human Rights Commission presidents, political parties and civil society representatives, diplomats and UN officials in Burundi.
