BNUB PIU handed over to Burundi media houses copies of the manual Media Coverage of Judiciary issues

11 April 2013 – BNUB Public Information unit handed over to Burundi media houses and organizations copies of the manual "Media Coverage of Judiciary issues" published in partnership with National Communication Council (CNC), Burundian Press Observatory (OPB).

During the ceremony at Maison de la Presse, Bujumbura, BNUB reiterated its support to the sector which is crucial to help consolidate dialogue and culture of peace. Regarding the adoption of a new Press Law, the office highlighted the fact that some articles of the text could undermine Burundian image and called for a law based on international standards which enable journalists exercise properly as the preparations for 2015 elections have started.

CNC president noted that the new tool will enable journalists improve the coverage of judiciary issues and committed himself to promote deontology and freedom of the press while OPB executive director reiterated openness to undertake joint activities with the State regulatory body. OPB also criticized the recently adopted Press Law but the Parliament and invited the Senate to reject the current version as it hamper freedom of speech and journalists work.

The manual's publication is part of a workshop on "Media Coverage of Judiciary issues", funded by BNUB and UNDP.

During the discussions, PACAM, a platform composed of bilateral and multilateral partners which assist Burundi's communication sector, has announced the organization of a similar training in 2013 for radio, TV and press print journalists.
