Bujumbura 3 August 2012 – The United Nations Peacebuilding Fund (PBF) assistance to Burundi was discussed during the 43rd Joint Steering Committee meeting, co-chaired by Deputy Special Representative of the Secretary-General and UN Resident Coordinator Ms. Rosine-Sori-Coulibaly and the Permanent Secretary of the National Committee for Aid Coordination (CNCA), Mr. Pamphile Muderega.

Bujumbura, 27 July 2012 – The United Nations Office in Burundi (BNUB) on Tuesday 24 July 2012 learned that Faustin Ndikumana, president of the NGO Parole et Actions pour le Réveil des Consciences et l’Evolution des Mentalités (PARCEM), has been given a five-year jail sentence and a fine of 500,000 Burundian francs by the anti-corruption corruption Court, as part of his judgement for “false statements” in relation to the Minister of Justice, Pacal Barandagiye’s complaint.

For the past 18 months, Karin Landgren has been the Special Representative of the Secretary-General (SRSG) and head of the UN Office in Burundi (BNUB), and she says that though donor interest in Burundi may be wavering, there is still a lot of work to be done. “Burundi has made it through horrendous conflict in a period that Burundians themselves call the dark years,” she says, “and it would be a shame—and it would be premature—for the international community to kind of wipe their hands of Burundi now and turn away.”
