Despite progress, Burundi needs assistance to ease poverty, tensions – UN official

 24 January 2013 – Burundi continues to make steady progress in strengthening governance and recovering from recurrent strife, but given persistent political tensions and poverty, support from the international community is still required, a United Nations envoy said today.

24 January 2013 - Despite political challenges and concerns about human rights, Burundi has continued to make progress in peace consolidation, security and stability as well as improving human rights situation, the United Nations Secretary-General’s report states.

17 January 2013 - The United Nations Peacebuilding Commission (PBC) chair to Burundi this week reiterated international community willingness to support Burundi in the follow up of Geneva’s partners conference held in October 2012.

UNDAF 2012-2016’s signature ceremony

UN agencies representatives during the signature ceremony of the new UNDAF in Bujumbura. The new agreement UNDAF is based in the country’s strategy to combat poverty (CSLP II) discussed with donors at Geneva’s Partners Conference, in October 2012, and focused on good governance, economy growth and improvement of basic services access. Within the UNDAF 2012-2016, the United Nations system will provide and help mobilize $600 million to support Burundi.
