9 April 2014 - The special Adviser of the United Nations Secretary General for genocide prevention Adama Dieng on Tuesday afternoon started a three-day working visit in Burundi as part of a sub-regional tour.

The Special Adviser is holding meetings with Burundi authorities, including an audience with the President of Republic, political parties leaders, civil society, religious organizations and media representatives as well as members of international community.

Adama Dieng, from Senegal, was appointed Special Adviser for Genocide Prevention by the Secretary General on July 17th, 2012.

In his remarks at launch of the 20th anniversary of Rwanda genocide "Kwibuka20"

Ban Ki-moon stressed that since 1994 events, several measures had been taken to address this issue. “Member States adopted the ‘responsibility to protect’ principle. We have established the United Nations Office of the Special Adviser on the Prevention of Genocide”, he added.

The Special Adviser acts as a catalyst to raise awareness of the causes and dynamics of genocide, to alert relevant actors where there is a risk of genocide and to advocate and mobilize for appropriate action.
