4 December 2013 – The United Nations Office in Burundi (BNUB) calls on all Burundian political parties and actors to show restraint with respect to the ongoing constitutional review process. It also welcomes the government’s commitment to encourage to promote dialogue before the adoption of important instruments, particularly the Constitution and the Electoral Code, in the spirit of the recommendations of the roadmap.

In a document issued today, BNUB “welcomes the consensus reached on the need to involve all socio-political components of the country in the constitutional review process” and hails the government’s commitment to encourage other national institutions, such as Parliament, to promote dialogue before the adoption of important instruments, particularly the Constitution and the Electoral Code, in the spirit of the recommendations of the roadmap.

BNUB calls on all Burundian political parties and actors “to be measured and show restraint when addressing these issues” and “urges them to participate effectively in the planned inclusive consultations in order to express their concerns”, the communiqué says.

BNUB’s communiqué highlights the adoption of the elements for the effective implementation of the roadmap adopted by Burundian political parties and actors at the workshop on “the evaluation of the implementation of the roadmap” which took place in Bujumbura from 27-29 November 2013. The 3-day meeting was jointly organized by the Government of Burundi and BNUB and brought together political actors and parties, Governors, leaders of political parties youth wings and the National Electoral Commission.

The UN office also commends participants for their commitment to prioritize dialogue and consultation to settle their differences and seek creative solutions to the challenges facing their country.
